FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
City of Marseilles Awarded Community Development Block Grant for Critical Infrastructure Improvements
Marseilles, IL – The City of Marseilles is pleased to announce it has been awarded $1,000,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) to support essential infrastructure improvements within the City.
DCEO grants are funding opportunities provided by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to promote economic growth, job creation, and community development across the State of Illinois. These grants support a wide range of initiatives, including small business assistance, broadband expansion, infrastructure improvements, and social equity programs. Funding may include direct assistance for businesses, capital investments, and programs benefiting low- to moderate-income residents, often leveraging federal resources or aligning with the State’s ReBuild Illinois initiative.
The CDBG funds awarded to the City of Marseilles will be used specifically for sanitary sewer infrastructure improvements along Illinois Street. The project includes lining the sanitary sewer and all sewer service laterals up to the public right-of-way line, as well as installing a clean-out at the right-of-way line for each service. These improvements are designed to prevent rainwater infiltration into the sewer system, reduce the risk of system overload, and extend the life of the existing infrastructure.
Upon completion of the sewer improvements, the City will be able to repave Illinois Street with confidence, without concern for future sewer collapses beneath the roadway. This coordinated infrastructure approach ensures responsible use of public funds while improving roadway conditions, system reliability, and overall community safety.
A public hearing regarding the grant was held on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, allowing residents the opportunity to review and comment on the proposed project. The grant application was subsequently submitted in December 2024. In April 2025, the City received letters of support from legislators, local businesses, and residents, demonstrating strong community backing for the project.
City officials expressed their appreciation to DCEO and all stakeholders involved for their support and partnership, and reaffirmed the City of Marseilles’ commitment to investing in infrastructure that supports long-term growth, safety, and quality of life for residents.
